US Warns Citizens to Steer Clear of Abuja’s Military and Government Facilities

The United States Mission in Nigeria has raised fresh security concerns, issuing a stern alert to its citizens on Monday, advising them to avoid unnecessary visits to military and government facilities in Abuja.

The warning comes in light of what the Embassy described as “increased global security concerns,” which have prompted an immediate review of movements around sensitive locations within the Nigerian capital.

According to the statement released by the US Embassy in Abuja, “all embassy personnel and their families are now prohibited from visiting military sites or other government venues in Abuja except on official duty.”

Though the Embassy stopped short of naming the specific global developments that triggered this alert, sources suggest a wider shift in US security postures across multiple regions, especially following escalating tensions and threats worldwide.

The Embassy urged American citizens residing in or visiting Nigeria to remain extremely vigilant, especially when visiting public places, notably locations popular among Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.

Citizens were further advised to:

  • Avoid large gatherings and public events,
  • Refrain from predictable routines that could expose them to surveillance or targeting,
  • Familiarise themselves with emergency exits in public buildings,
  • And review personal security plans regularly.

“Stay alert in public places. Be particularly mindful in areas and venues frequently visited by Westerners and government officials. Avoid unnecessary travel where possible,” the statement read.

Despite the heightened caution, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the US Consulate in Lagos remain open and fully operational, continuing to provide services to American citizens.

Meanwhile, those seeking more detailed guidance or in need of immediate assistance have been advised to visit the US Embassy’s official website for updates.

This fresh alert comes at a time when global security anxieties are running high, and citizens across the world are being urged to tread carefully — especially in regions marked by underlying instability.
