President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s unity is under direct threat from terrorists, insurgents, bandits, and separatist agitators — warning that these forces of destabilisation must no longer be treated as minor security challenges.
At the grand finale of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) held at Murtala Square in Kaduna, President Tinubu — represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima — issued a bold directive to the Armed Forces: confront and crush the enemies of Nigeria’s peace without fear or hesitation.
“To the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, I say this with absolute clarity: the time to rise is now. You have my full authorisation and the trust of the Nigerian people to confront and defeat those who seek to undermine our nation,” Tinubu said.
The President did not mince words in describing terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and separatism as “grave existential threats” that must no longer be seen as mere disturbances.
“These evils do not discriminate — they destroy churches and mosques alike and orphan children without asking their tribe or faith,” he added.
Sustained Military Backing
Tinubu assured that his administration will continue to invest in the military — from modern weaponry and intelligence tools to critical manpower development.
“Let it be said plainly: our response must be united, calm, and uncompromising. I assure you that this administration stands firmly with you on that path,” the President stated.
He paid solemn tribute to fallen soldiers, affirming that their blood would not be in vain:
“Many of our finest have fallen in the line of duty. Some now lie in silence beneath the soil of a grateful nation, and others carry the wounds of oath. Their memory will endure through generations.”
Support for Military Families
The President also praised military families and associations like NAOWA and NASWA, whose role in maintaining morale at home, he said, was often overlooked but deeply appreciated.
“We have no other country but Nigeria. We must not mortgage our future to division, indifference, or delay.”
Army Chief Speaks on Reform
Also speaking at the event, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede reflected on the Nigerian Army’s evolution since its 1863 founding. He said this year’s theme — “Developing the Soldier First Concept” — signals a reform that prioritises soldier welfare and professionalism.
“We cannot build a great army without well-motivated and well-trained soldiers. Their willpower and morale are the bedrock of national security,” Oluyede noted.
He assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, and all security agencies were working in synergy to ensure criminal elements find no foothold anywhere in the country.
High-Profile Attendance & Symbolism
The event featured military parades, tactical drills, and equipment exhibitions that drew loud cheers from Kaduna residents and dignitaries.
Notable guests included:
- Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon
- Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna
- Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru
- Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle
- Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa
- Former Chiefs of Army Staff: Lt. Gen. Ihejirika, Buratai, Faruk Yahaya
- Traditional rulers, lawmakers, diplomats, and military veterans
As Nigeria’s security landscape grows increasingly complex, President Tinubu’s message was unmistakably clear: the era of excuses is over. The Armed Forces have been given both the political will and public trust to take the battle to those threatening the country’s survival — and 2025 may be the turning point.
