ADC Declares Three-Day National Mourning to Honour Buhari, Suspends Political Activities

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared a three-day period of national mourning to honour the memory of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

In a statement released on Monday from Kano, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, announced the suspension of all political activities by the ADC at both national and state levels during the mourning period.

According to Mark, the decision was made in recognition of the late president’s legacy, which he described as one of service, sacrifice, and commitment to Nigeria’s unity and democratic growth.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of exceptional character. As a soldier, he fought bravely to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of our nation.

“As a democratically elected president, he contributed significantly to the growth and consolidation of democratic governance in Nigeria. His leadership reflected discipline, commitment, and a deep sense of patriotism,” the statement read.

The ADC further urged the Federal Government to take deliberate steps to immortalise the late president, noting that his contributions to the country deserve a permanent place in national history.

“We believe it is only fitting that his name and contributions be etched permanently into the national memory through the establishment of monuments, institutions, or initiatives that reflect the values he stood for,” Mark added.

The party extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the Federal Government, and all Nigerians mourning the loss of the former military and civilian leader. The ADC called on its members and supporters across the country to observe the declared mourning period with “solemnity, dignity, and respect.”

Buhari, who served as Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, was widely recognised for his anti-corruption stance, military discipline, and efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, even as his tenure sparked deep political debates across Nigeria.
