BREAKTHROUGH IN JIGAWA: Police Gun Down 5, Arrest Kingpin as Kidnapping Syndicate Crumbles

It was a long night for criminals and a big win for security forces. In what can only be described as a daring and successful operation, the Jigawa State Police have dismantled a notorious kidnapping ring operating between Kano and Jigawa, killing five members and arresting several others — including the suspected gang leader.

The operation was announced Wednesday by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdullahi, during a press briefing at the state command headquarters in Dutse.

According to the Commissioner, the police swung into action around 2 a.m. on May 16 after receiving intel that an 80-year-old woman had been kidnapped in Kano and was being smuggled through Jigawa. Multiple police units — from Gumel, Gagarawa, Sule Tankarkar, Garki, and Ringim — teamed up with local vigilantes, hunters, and the fierce Yan Bulala to block the suspects’ path.

What followed was a fierce gunfight.

“We engaged the kidnappers in a shootout. Five of them were neutralized on the spot,” the Commissioner revealed.
“We also arrested five suspects, including the ring leader, Yahya, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.”

Rescue and Recovery

The kidnapped victim was rescued safely and reunited with her family. Police recovered weapons and other items at the scene, including:

  • 2 AK-47 rifles
  • 1 multipurpose machine gun
  • 14 rounds of live ammo
  • 2 motorcycles
  • 3 mobile phones believed to belong to victims or suspects

But that wasn’t all.

Crackdown Expands: Drugs, Fraud, Child Abuse

The police also arrested 14 suspects linked to drugs, unlawful gathering, and possession of substances like Exol 5, Valium, Tramadol, and suspected Indian hemp. In another disturbing case, officers rescued a 7-year-old boy who had been tortured by a neighbor in Gwaram LGA. The suspect is already in court.

Four others were nabbed for allegedly printing fake U.S. dollars and naira, while two more were caught with forged ATM cards and counterfeit currency.

A Warning to Criminals

Commissioner Abdullahi praised the courage and professionalism of the officers involved and thanked local security volunteers for their critical role in the operation. He assured residents that some suspects have already been charged to court, and investigations are ongoing.

“We’re not backing down. There is no hiding place for criminals in Jigawa,” the CP declared.
“We urge the public to keep working with us — report anything suspicious. Together, we’ll build a safer state.”

The message from the streets of Jigawa is clear: criminal gangs are being hunted — and justice is catching up.
