A peaceful Sunday turned into a nightmare for an Abuja resident who was reportedly brutalised by a police officer near Wuse Market — just minutes after leaving the church. The victim, whose sister shared the account on social media platform X, alleged that the officer flogged him relentlessly for 30 minutes, leaving him with visible injuries and emotional trauma.
The disturbing account was first posted by the victim’s sister using the handle @torty_mercy. According to her, her brother was merely a passenger in a commercial vehicle that briefly stopped by the roadside near Zenith Bank at Wuse Market when a confrontation broke out between the driver and a police officer.
But the situation allegedly spiraled into unwarranted violence when the officer — instead of de-escalating the situation — reportedly walked over to the window, spat at her brother, and began assaulting him with a large stick.
A viral video posted online shows the victim detailing his ordeal:
“I’m just coming back from church at Wuse Market… a policeman flogged me for over 30 minutes. I’ve sustained injuries on my leg. I can’t run… I was just a passenger, yet now I’m covered in bruises.”
Mercy, visibly shaken, recounted in her post:
“This police officer spat on my brother for absolutely no reason. My brother got down to ask why, and this man began beating him. His colleagues stood by, told my brother to run, but didn’t stop their man. He recently had an accident — he couldn’t even move fast!”
To make matters worse, the officer was allegedly reeking of alcohol.
“What if he had a gun? Would my brother have been shot just because he dared to go to church on a Sunday?” she wrote.
She further claimed the officer tried to smash her brother’s phone, broke his glasses, and deliberately targeted the leg he was recovering on.
“This hurts more than heartbreak. My brother couldn’t resist, he told the officer he was injured, yet the beatings continued.”
In response to the outrage, the Federal Capital Territory Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the officers involved have been identified and disciplinary proceedings are already underway.
“The officers have been identified and disciplinary proceedings have commenced. We’ve also reached out to the individual for more details,” Adeh said in a statement.
As the victim recovers, Nigerians are once again asking hard questions: How many more lives will be scarred or lost before accountability becomes the standard within the police force?
For now, the public waits — not just for disciplinary action, but for justice that sets a new precedent.
