The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, killing at least 21 people and destroying properties worth millions of naira. The forum made this known in an official statement on Friday, signed by its chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The flooding, which occurred earlier in the week, left the Mokwa community devastated — homes washed away, families torn apart, and lives lost. Images and stories from the affected area paint a grim picture of destruction caused by the torrential rains that overwhelmed the region.
Governor AbdulRazaq, speaking on behalf of all Nigerian governors, described the disaster as “shocking” and “heartbreaking.” His statement emphasized the NGF’s support for Governor Umar Bago of Niger State, the affected families, and all victims of this natural disaster.
“We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and express our support to the state government at this difficult time,” he said.
The NGF also acknowledged the swift intervention by the Niger State Government and emergency agencies in responding to the crisis. While praising their efforts, AbdulRazaq highlighted the urgent need for improved climate resilience measures.
“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live,” the statement continued. “We commit ourselves as leaders of our people to continue working with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Emergency Management Agency to help our people cope and to strengthen response systems.”
The forum also called on citizens to support the state government’s relief efforts and cooperate with emergency responders who are still working around the clock in Mokwa.
As search and rescue efforts continue, there’s a growing call for more decisive action to protect vulnerable communities from the increasing threat of climate-related disasters. The NGF has pledged to stay involved and monitor the situation closely.
Updates are expected in the coming days as relief operations unfold and damage assessments continue.
