Amid rising fears over cult violence in Iruekpen, Edo State, federal lawmaker Marcus Onobun has forcefully denied allegations linking him to the resurgence of cult activities in the community, describing the reports as “false, malicious, and politically motivated.”
The Member Representing Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives is at the center of a storm following claims by residents that members of the banned Eiye Confraternity were allegedly regrouping near his residence in Iruekpen — a town currently on edge due to cult-related violence.
Tensions flared after community members raised concerns over a spike in cult-related incidents, reportedly involving clashes tied to the Eiye Confraternity. Accusations began circulating online and offline, insinuating that Onobun, a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, might be aiding or tolerating the cultists.
But in a detailed statement released on Sunday, Onobun refuted the allegations, describing them as “unfounded” and an attempt to drag his name through the mud.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I have never — directly or indirectly — supported, encouraged, financed, or participated in cult-related activities,” he stated. “This appears to be a politically driven smear campaign aimed at tarnishing my reputation and derailing the progress we’ve made.”
He disclosed that he had not even been in Edo State since April 22, 2025, further raising suspicions that the allegations may be part of a broader scheme to undermine opposition voices and create a pretext for political intimidation.
According to him, the actual incident being cited occurred at a brothel in the cattle market — far from his residence — and involved two individuals from the Iruekpen community.
“It is important for the public to know that this clash had nothing to do with me or my household. Unfortunately, the rumor mill is being weaponized for character assassination,” Onobun said.
He emphasized his long-standing commitment to empowering youth through education, skill acquisition, and mentorship — programs he says are “completely at odds” with cultism or any form of social vice. He also pointed to the recent commissioning of a police station in Iruekpen as evidence of his commitment to security and peace.
Onobun called on both the media and the public to be cautious in spreading unverified claims that could stir panic or inflict damage to individual reputations. He warned the masterminds behind what he calls a “smear campaign” to desist, stating that no amount of blackmail or falsehood will stop him from fulfilling his mandate.
“I remain resolute in my service to Iruekpen and my entire constituency. I stand for truth, justice, and good governance — and no campaign of lies will change that.”
🔔 The lawmaker’s firm denial comes at a time when tensions in Edo remain high, and observers suggest further investigation may be needed to separate facts from politically charged fiction.
