European champions Paris Saint-Germain, who arrived at the Club World Cup with ambitions of global dominance, were handed a harsh reality check on Thursday as Brazilian side Botafogo edged them 1-0 in Pasadena — leaving Group B wide open and denting PSG’s momentum after an emphatic tournament start.
PSG, fresh off a stunning 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in their opening match, were widely expected to cruise through the group stage. But instead of a routine victory, the Ligue 1 winners found themselves outmatched by a disciplined Botafogo side at the Rose Bowl.
Star midfielder Désiré Doué, who had dazzled in PSG’s 5-0 Champions League final win over Inter Milan last month, admitted the French side had failed to capitalise on their chances.
“We weren’t efficient,” Doué confessed. “We created plenty of opportunities, but they only needed two or three shots to score. They were ruthless in front of goal.”
Fatigue may have been a factor. After a gruelling domestic and European season, PSG adjusted their training schedule in California to give players afternoon rest periods. Manager Luis Enrique also rotated his squad — leaving regular starters Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, Fabian Ruiz, and Marquinhos on the bench until halftime — but the fresh legs weren’t enough to break down Botafogo’s compact defence.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Igor Jesus fired past Gianluigi Donnarumma, handing Botafogo a lead they would not relinquish.
Rather than search for excuses, Luis Enrique praised the Brazilian champions for their tactical discipline.
“Botafogo are the best defensive team we’ve faced all season — better than anything we’ve seen in Ligue 1 or even the Champions League,” he said. “They were compact, disciplined, and dangerous on the counter. The goal gave them belief, and they defended superbly.”
PSG dominated possession but lacked their usual sharpness and struggled to find space against the resolute Brazilian side. Doué acknowledged the defeat should serve as a reality check.
“We were more competitive in the duels today, but our efficiency wasn’t there. This loss needs to wake us up. It’s not over yet — we still have one more match and we intend to win it,” he said.
PSG will face MLS side Seattle Sounders in their final group game on Monday. Luis Enrique warned that the path ahead remains challenging.
“This is a very difficult competition. Every match will be like this,” he said. “We must prepare ourselves to fight for every point.”
