Anambra Government Orders Repainting of Dilapidated Buildings

The Anambra State Government has issued a directive to residents and property owners to repaint all dilapidated or unsightly buildings visible to the public, especially in urban areas including Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia. Enforcement will begin on July 1, 2025, through field inspections by environmental regulators.

In a statement released Thursday, Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, said the exercise takes immediate effect and is aimed at enhancing the state’s visual appeal, environmental quality, and urban standards.

According to the commissioner, buildings that haven’t been repainted in over a decade or have peeling, fading, or deteriorating exteriors must be refurbished. Both residential and commercial properties in high-visibility zones are subject to the order.

“This initiative is part of efforts to create a clean, beautiful, and eco-friendly Anambra, and is backed by the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, Part 4, Section 79 (1–7),” the statement read.

The state says the move is not just about aesthetics but also about improving structural integrity and enhancing green space across communities. Odimegwu called on residents and corporate bodies to comply voluntarily before enforcement begins.

“A cleaner and more beautiful Anambra is achievable if we all work together,” he said.
