Nigeria has been thrown into a deep wave of national mourning following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025 — just hours after the demise of his close friend and former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The highly respected monarch died at the age of 91, ending a remarkable reign that spanned over six decades. Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and served for 64 years, making him one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in Nigerian history.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona became Awujale at just 26 years old. His tenure was marked by a firm commitment to cultural preservation, political integrity, and the development of Ijebuland and Ogun State at large.
A close confidant of the late President Buhari, Oba Adetona was widely known for his courage in confronting social injustice and corruption. His voice resonated across military and civilian eras, consistently advocating for constitutional roles for traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance structure.
Governor Abiodun Reacts: “Double Sadness for Nigeria”
Confirming the monarch’s death, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed deep sorrow, calling it “a day of double sadness” for Nigeria.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” the governor said in a personal statement.
“Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria in general. It is indeed double sadness that he passed away on the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari died in a London hospital.”
Abiodun hailed the Awujale as a transformative leader who modernized Ijebuland through infrastructure, education, and commerce, while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu people. Under his guidance, the Ojude Oba festival rose to international prominence, becoming a symbol of tradition and unity.
“His leadership not only enhanced the cultural heritage of Ijebuland but also solidified its reputation as a thriving hub of commerce and tradition,” the governor added.
National and Global Impact
Oba Adetona was more than a royal father — he was a statesman in his own right. He boldly spoke truth to power, standing firm during Nigeria’s most turbulent political transitions. His views on national ethics, governance, and unity were frequently sought by leaders across political divides.
In recognition of his legacy, Olabisi Onabanjo University renamed its School of Governance Studies after him in 2021, a gesture that symbolized his lasting impact on education and leadership in Nigeria.
A Legacy Etched in History
As Nigeria continues to mourn the passing of two iconic figures — a former president and a first-class traditional ruler — many view their deaths on the same day as symbolic, marking the end of an era.
“His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his people will forever be etched in our hearts,” said Governor Abiodun.
The late monarch is expected to be laid to rest in accordance with traditional rites. Tributes are pouring in from across Nigeria and beyond, as the country reflects on the extraordinary lives of two men who shaped its modern story in government and in tradition.
May Oba Adetona’s soul rest in peace. May his legacy inspire generations to come.
