Blood on the Market Ground: Suspected IPOB/ESN Landmine Kills Woman, Injures Five in Imo State

Terror returned to Imo State on June 24, 2025, as a landmine believed to have been planted by suspected IPOB/ESN militants detonated at Eke Ubaheze Market in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area, killing a woman and injuring five others.

The explosion, which occurred at around 2:30 PM, sparked chaos and panic across Ubaheze and neighbouring villages, as traders and customers fled for safety. The device went off just after a middle-aged woman, identified as Ngozi Umeh, unknowingly stepped on it while going about her daily market routine.

Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as “a horrific scene,” with blood staining the ground and people screaming in fear and confusion. Some residents claim the explosive was deliberately planted at the market by individuals believed to be operatives of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Local sources initially reported six deaths, but the Imo State Police Command later clarified that one fatality was recorded, alongside five injured individuals who are now receiving treatment.

In a swift response, Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, deployed a team of explosives experts, tactical units, and officers from the Orsu and Orlu divisions to the blast site. The area was immediately cordoned off, and a thorough search was conducted for other potential explosive devices.

According to the Imo State Police PRO, Henry Okoye, preliminary investigations point to a landmine suspected to have been planted by IPOB/ESN actors. He said, “She was critically injured and later confirmed dead at the hospital, while five others are receiving medical attention.”

The Police Commissioner has ordered a full investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible, while reassuring residents that normalcy has been restored. The market has since reopened under tight security surveillance.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, late Ngozi Umeh, and vowed that the state will not bow to fear or terrorism:

“We will continue to fight until every criminal element is flushed out of Imo State. The safety of our people is non-negotiable.”

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid suspicious items, and report any unusual activity. The memory of the market bloodshed still lingers, as yet another innocent life is lost in Nigeria’s growing theatre of insecurity.
