FAKE CASH ALERT: Police Warn Jigawa Cattle Dealers as Sallah Frenzy Sparks Fresh Fears of Fraud

JIGAWA, Nigeria — May 29, 2025

As the sacred festival of Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) approaches, the Nigerian Police Force has issued a red-alert warning to cattle dealers and marketgoers across Jigawa State to beware of fraudsters flooding livestock markets with counterfeit currency.

In an exclusive chat with PUNCH on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer of Jigawa State Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, sounded the alarm, stressing the urgent need for vigilance amidst the pre-Sallah rush.

The warning follows the recent arrest and parade of four suspects on May 21, who were caught with stacks of fake US dollars and Nigerian naira—evidence that the fake currency syndicate is real and active.

With the Sallah season in full swing, markets are becoming a hotbed of intense activity. Muslims trooping in to buy rams and cattle for the religious feast are unknowingly becoming prime targets for counterfeiters. The police fear that the chaotic buzz in these markets gives con artists the perfect cover to peddle fake money and vanish without a trace.

Cattle markets across Jigawa State—especially in areas with high foot traffic—have been flagged as vulnerable. The police are now doubling patrols and embedding officers in plain clothes to monitor transactions.

“These fraudsters are not amateurs,” Adam warned. “They know exactly when to strike—when everyone’s in a hurry and distracted by the rush.” He urged traders and buyers alike to cross-check every transaction and remain alert to unfamiliar faces and suspicious behavior.

SP Adam strongly advised cattle sellers and Sallah shoppers to report any shady activities immediately to the nearest security post. “If anything or anyone seems off, speak up. Your vigilance is the first line of defense,” he emphasized.

He also assured the public that the police are already ramping up their presence in markets and key areas. “We are on high alert. Our mission is to prevent crime and protect every law-abiding citizen this festive period,” Adam said.

The timing of this crackdown is no coincidence. Just last week, the police recovered forged currencies from suspects operating across northern Nigeria—a chilling reminder that fake currency operations often spike during large religious festivities.

Adam ended with a strong message of community cooperation: “This is not just a police job. It’s everyone’s job. If we all remain vigilant and work together, we can keep fraudsters out and ensure a joyous, crime-free Sallah.”

As the countdown to Eid continues, the Jigawa State Command reiterates its commitment to securing lives, markets, and memories. But the public’s role is pivotal. When in doubt, report. When it feels wrong, walk away.

📢 Stay alert. Stay safe. Celebrate smart.

This is a developing story. More updates will follow as Sallah approaches.
