Labour Party Gives Peter Obi 48-Hour Ultimatum to Resign

In a dramatic twist ahead of the 2027 elections, the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding his immediate resignation from the party over his involvement in the newly launched ADC coalition. LP insists Obi’s alignment with the opposition coalition led by Atiku Abubakar amounts to dual loyalty — something the party says it will not tolerate.

The ultimatum was issued on Thursday, July 3, 2025, by LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, via a statement posted on the party’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @NgLabour.

Ifoh accused Obi of formally aligning with the coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its new political platform, despite remaining a card-carrying member of the Labour Party.

“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona.
The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in Labour and one leg elsewhere,”
the statement read.

“Desperate Politicians Can’t Birth New Nigeria” – Labour Party Fires Back

In what appeared to be a direct jab at the former Anambra governor’s famous slogan — “A New Nigeria is Possible” — the Labour Party said the idea is a ruse, calling the coalition a gathering of “desperate, recycled, and frustrated politicians.”

“We maintain that the so-called coalition is driven by selfish power mongers who have no real interest in the people,”
Ifoh said.

He stressed that the party had no part in the ADC adoption and that any of its members who had joined the coalition must resign within 48 hours, or risk disciplinary action.

Obi Lobbying LP Members in Secret, Party Claims

According to Ifoh, Obi has been holding private meetings with some LP stakeholders, allegedly trying to lure them into joining his new political platform.

“We are aware that he’s been lobbying some of our members, but many have refused to defect with him,”
he said, warning loyal members to stand firm and protect the LP’s grassroots structures ahead of 2027.

“The dream of a new Nigeria can only be realized through the Labour Party,”
he added.

Obi Speaks After ADC Adoption

Meanwhile, Peter Obi broke his silence following the coalition’s formal adoption of ADC as their new platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The unveiling, which took place on Wednesday, July 2, saw the presence of prominent opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola, who were named interim national chairman and secretary of ADC, respectively.

Obi, Atiku, and other key figures have insisted that the coalition aims to present a united opposition front to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reno Omokri Flags ‘5 Contradictions’ in ADC

Adding to the political storm, Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide and known critic of Peter Obi, took to social media to list five contradictions about the ADC coalition.

He questioned the motives and composition of the alliance, suggesting that it was flawed at its core and should give Nigerians serious cause for concern.

As tensions rise within the opposition, the question remains: Will Peter Obi resign from LP to fully embrace the ADC coalition? Or will the party take disciplinary action to sever ties with its former flagbearer? What plays out in the next 48 hours could define the shape of the 2027 presidential race — and possibly the future of the Labour Party itself.
