The Lagos State Government has strongly denied claims made by former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, alleging that his brother’s property in Lagos was demolished by a state agency. In response, Lagos has launched an official investigation to unravel the truth.
The rebuttal came via a statement issued on Thursday, June 26, 2025, by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso. He described Obi’s comments as “disturbing” and “unverified,” stressing that no agency under the Lagos State Government was responsible for the alleged demolition.
“We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), or any other arm of the Lagos State Government, did not carry out the said demolition,” the statement read.
Mr. Omotoso also disclosed that a direct inquiry had been made to the relevant authorities. Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS & Urban Development — who oversees LASBCA — reportedly confirmed that the agency had no involvement in the matter.
“It is troubling that Mr. Peter Obi would make such serious accusations without first confirming the facts,” the statement added.
In response to the allegation, the state government has instructed the Office of Urban Development to launch a full investigation into the incident. The Permanent Secretary, Architect Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, has been directed to initiate this probe, which will be led by LASBCA.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on unlawful acts and reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, due process, and the rule of law.
“We will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws. Any individual or group found to have acted illegally will be brought to justice,” the government said.
Omotoso urged Lagosians to ignore Obi’s “baseless” allegations, insisting that the state’s focus remains on governance, public safety, and law enforcement — not political distractions.
“The Lagos State Government will not be swayed by attempts to discredit our efforts,” Omotoso stated. “We remain focused on our duty to the people.”
While the controversy continues to spark reactions on social media, Lagos authorities have promised transparency and truth. The outcome of the investigation is expected to shed light on the alleged demolition and determine whether any external or illegal actors were involved.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government maintains its position as a welcoming and lawful environment for all Nigerians to live and work.
