In the wake of a major security breakthrough, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised Nigerian security forces for the successful arrest of globally wanted terrorist leaders. But in his statement, Obi warned that arrests alone are not enough, insisting that justice and accountability must follow.
The arrests, which security operatives confirmed earlier this week, mark one of the most significant blows against terrorism in recent years. The Nigerian Army, in a coordinated operation with other forces, apprehended two notorious terrorist leaders whose names have long been on international watchlists. The United States Embassy in Nigeria also applauded the operation, describing it as both “commendable and significant.”
Obi’s Fresh Demand: Beyond Arrests, Ensure Justice
Reacting on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi hailed the gallantry of Nigerian troops, describing their sacrifices as proof that a secure Nigeria is possible. However, he cautioned against the recurring pattern where suspects are arrested but eventually released back into society without proper prosecution.
“Beyond arrests, we must remain vigilant,” Obi wrote. “Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served, when those arrested are recycled back into society without accountability. Justice must take its full course so that impunity is not encouraged.”
The former Anambra State governor added that Nigeria’s future depends on providing the military with the right equipment, training, and motivation to sustain these victories. According to him, “Security is the foundation of every meaningful development. Together, we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our land.”
Public Reactions: Support and Criticism
Nigerians quickly took to social media to weigh in on Obi’s remarks. While many praised his call for justice and stronger institutional support for the military, others accused him of downplaying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s role in backing the operations.
One user wrote: “True talk! Security is not just about arrests, it’s about justice and accountability. Our officers are doing their part, but leaders must ensure that their sacrifices are not wasted.”
Another, however, criticized Obi, saying: “Too much English, sir! Bottom line is, President Tinubu is doing well. Congratulate him and have peace.”
International Reactions
The United States Mission in Nigeria joined in commending the government and military, confirming that the arrested men were senior figures in Ansaru, a splinter group linked to Al-Qaeda. Washington emphasized that the development was a step forward in the global fight against terrorism.
Meanwhile, Nigerian troops in Borno State reported further success, with at least 25 fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram surrendering in Bama. According to military sources, morale within the ranks remains high following this chain of victories.
While the arrests are celebrated, Obi’s call highlights a deeper concern: Will justice be pursued to the end, or will political compromises once again undermine the fight against terror? As the dust settles, Nigerians are waiting to see if this victory marks the beginning of a lasting shift in the nation’s security fortunes.
