Police Arrest 51 Suspected Thugs, Recover Weapons and Drugs

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 51 suspected thugs and recovered dangerous weapons and illicit drugs following a coordinated operation aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts across the city.

The intelligence-led clearance operation, which lasted from Friday to Sunday, targeted known trouble spots in various parts of the Kano metropolis, including Kano Municipal, Dala, Gwale, and Tarauni Local Government Areas. Specific neighborhoods such as Kofar Mata, Zage, Kurna, Rijiyar Lemo, Dorayi, Hotoro, and Sheka were all covered in the three-day exercise.

Police spokesperson Hussaini Abdullahi announced the arrests in a statement released on Monday, emphasizing the command’s ongoing commitment to eradicating violent crime and curbing youth gang activities across the state.

“The command is fully determined to decisively tackle thuggery and related crimes. A total of 51 suspects were apprehended, and dangerous weapons and illicit substances were recovered,” Abdullahi stated.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, also issued a stern warning against the use of weapons during traditional events such as ‘Kidan Gangi’—a cultural music performance that sometimes turns violent. He further expressed concern over a disturbing trend: young people showcasing weapons on social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram.

“Brandishing weapons online glorifies criminal behavior and encourages teenagers to join gangs. Anyone caught engaging in such acts will face arrest and prosecution,” Bakori warned.

The commissioner didn’t stop there—he called out parents, guardians, and even blacksmiths who aid in hiding or supplying weapons to criminals. He made it clear that anyone found complicit in such activities will be held legally accountable.

Finally, the police urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities. The public can reach the Kano State Police Command through its emergency hotlines: 08032600299, 08032600300, and 08032600301.
