Sallah: Northern CAN Tells Leaders, “Make Double Sacrifice for Nigeria Like Prophet Ibrahim Did”

As Muslims across Nigeria and the world prepare to mark Eid-el-Kabir, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the FCT has sent a strong message to the country’s political leaders: make a “double sacrifice” to secure the nation, just as Prophet Ibrahim obeyed God by offering a sacrifice.

The association urged those in authority to reflect on the spirit of Sallah and match it with real action to heal Nigeria’s wounds—insecurity, economic hardship, and a disillusioned populace.

In a heartfelt Sallah message released on Thursday, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the Chairman of Northern CAN, drew parallels between Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering obedience to God and what is expected of Nigeria’s leadership today.

“This season honours Ibrahim’s sacrifice and devotion to God. It’s a powerful reminder to leaders that they, too, must sacrifice—not just comforts or ego—but genuinely work towards securing the country,” Hayab stated.

He added, “We want those holding political power to make a double sacrifice, just like Muslims sacrifice during Sallah. Let them offer their time, honesty, and policies to rebuild trust and security in Nigeria.”

Rev. Hayab didn’t mince words. He pointed fingers at the political elite, urging them to go beyond issuing statements or mouthing empty promises.

“Our leaders must act in obedience—not just to their religious faith—but also to their constitutional and moral duties to protect Nigerians,” he said.

He warned that insecurity, hunger, and hopelessness were breeding fear among Nigerians and emboldening those who want to destabilise the country.

According to Hayab, the government must now act boldly and urgently to restore public confidence and repair the nation’s “open wounds.”

“The Federal Government has to stop pretending. It’s time to heal our land, rebuild trust, and give Nigerians a reason to hope again,” he said.

The CAN chairman also extended warm Eid-el-Kabir greetings to the Muslim community. He called for peaceful coexistence, urging religious and community leaders to avoid inflammatory rhetoric or actions that could further divide the country.

He concluded with a reminder to all Nigerians—regardless of faith—to remember the poor and vulnerable in the spirit of Sallah.

As Nigeria faces one of its most challenging periods in recent history, the message from CAN is simple yet powerful: faith without sacrifice is empty, and leadership without action is betrayal. While Muslims slaughter rams in obedience to God, leaders must slaughter ego, greed, and indifference in service to the people.

The time to act is now.
