Senate President Akpabio’s Health Sparks Controversy

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria after a brief stay in London, addressing widespread rumors about his health. Upon his arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Akpabio dismissed claims of being critically ill, stating, “I’m fit as a fiddle” and attributing the rumors to “the imagination of the purveyors”.

The speculation began after reports emerged that Akpabio had been hospitalized in London following a medical emergency during his return from the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva. A viral video further fueled concerns, showing Akpabio using a black walking stick and being assisted by aides .

However, Senator Gbenga Daniel, who visited Akpabio in London, confirmed that the Senate President was in good health, stating, “The news out there is that you have been indisposed, but seeing you here now paints a very different picture”.

Despite these assurances, the incident has ignited debates about the transparency of political leaders’ health statuses and the role of media in shaping public perception. Some critics argue that the initial reports were part of a smear campaign, while others question the adequacy of the information provided to the public.

As the Senate prepares to resume, Akpabio has promised “robust legislative engagements,” aiming to move past the controversy and focus on his legislative duties.

The episode underscores the delicate balance between public health, political transparency, and media responsibility in Nigeria’s political landscape.
