Anambra Robbery Ring Busted: Police Nab 3 Suspects, Recover Stolen Benz, Lexus, and Firearm

In what police describe as a major breakthrough, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested three suspected armed robbers accused of terrorizing residents and snatching vehicles at gunpoint. The arrests were made on Saturday, May 30, in Agukwu-Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area, following a tip-off from a suspect already in custody.

The arrest, carried out by officers of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, led to the capture of Monday Onoja, Sanusi Muhammed, and Kenneth Nwokpu, all men reportedly between the ages of 27 and 32.

According to a statement released Monday by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects were linked to an armed robbery syndicate that has been preying on innocent citizens — ambushing them, dispossessing them of cars, phones, and other valuables under threat of violence.

“The team recovered one automatic pump action gun, and items suspected to be stolen, including a white Mercedes Benz C300 4MATIC with registration number KWC 140, an ash Lexus 350 with registration number 669 CY, and two luxury mobile phones,” the statement disclosed.

The bust was made possible thanks to intelligence gathered during interrogation of an already detained armed robbery suspect, revealing the inner workings of a network that police now say extends beyond the three men in custody.

“This development highlights the command’s proactive approach to potentially disrupting all criminal networks in the state,” Ikenga added, noting that investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are expected as officers close in on gang members still on the run.

While the arrest offers temporary relief to anxious residents, the broader criminal web remains partly intact — for now. Police have promised to ramp up efforts to locate and apprehend fleeing accomplices. The command also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their communities.

—Updates will follow as investigations deepen.
